John 16:1-4

John 15:18-25

Following Jesus will inevitably lead to 3 things:

  • Bearing fruit
  • Loving people
  • Persecution

To be forewarned is to be forearmed in many cases.

Five stages of religious persecution:

  • Stereotyping
  • Vilifying
  • Marginalizing
  • Criminalizing
  • Persecuting

There are two crosses in the life of every true Christian: the cross on which Jesus suffered and died, and the cross on which we must suffer and die to self.

Persecution will be worth it in the end for these reasons:

  • Persecution for the sake of the name of Jesus is evidence you belong to Jesus.
  • Jesus can sympathize with you in your suffering (he experienced more than you ever will) and when persecuted, your fellowship deepens as you sympathize with him too.
  • As you share in his sufferings, you share in his power. (Philippians 3:10-11)
  • If you share in his sufferings, you will share his inheritance and glory. (Romans 8:17)
  • You are rewarded with forgiveness of sins now and a redemption of your bodies at Christ’s coming. (Romans 8:21-25)
  • Suffering develops character and righteousness in your life, and when you persevere, you will receive the crown of life. (James 1:2-4, 12)
  • If you suffer, you are blessed for the spirit of Christ rests on you. (1 Peter 4:12-16)

How do you respond? Luke 6:26-37 shows:

  • Love when hated.
  • Do good to those who hate you.
  • Bless those who persecute you.

Then your reward will be great!
