Sermon Notes

Deuteronomy 17:14-20

1 Samuel 8:19-20

1 Kings 3:1-3

1 Kings 10:14-15

The exception in your life begins a drift in your heart. Every exception is a drift away from God.

What happens when you make an exception?

  • Your heart drifts.
  • Your discernment dulls.
  • You stop hearing the Spirit clearly.
  • Your witness weakens.
  • Your joy diminishes.
  • You choose comfort over Christ, compromise over conviction.
  • You choose pleasure over purity.
  • You choose control over surrender.
  • You choose public approval over God’s approval.

Choosing the wrong king doesn’t always look like rebellion.

Sometimes it just looks like choosing what feels easier, safer, more comfortable— instead of what’s right and faithful.

Your exceptions reveal your king.

Acts 3:13-15

If the king you choose is not Jesus, you lose.

Questions to reflect on:

  • Have you made exceptions where God gave commands?
  • In what areas of your life do you want what everyone else has instead of trusting what God wants for you?
  • Where has the drift already started in your heart?
