Sermon notes

The stronghold of addiction is a battle for control.

John 8:31

Search for the Freeing Truth

Seven false narratives that the enemy wants you believe about your addiction:

  1. Loner: I’m alone in this struggle
  2. In Denial: I’m still in control/I’m able to quit whenever I want
  3. Comparison: I’m not as bad as others
=
  4. Minimizing: I’m only hurting myself
  5. Dismissive: I’m just a victim of an addictive personality
  6. Guilt and Shame: I could never let anyone know the truth about me
  7. Fatalist: I’m going to struggle with this my whole life

Seven false narratives that hurt more than help:

  1. Tough Love: They are alone in this
  2. Church Lady: They just need to pray more
  3. School of Hard Knocks: They just need to hit rock bottom
  4. Enabler: They are not as bad as others
  5. In Denial: They are not addicted/the are only hurting themselves
  6. Curmudgeon: They are not deserving of my grace
  7. Fatalist: They are going to struggle with this their whole life
