Why address money? From Jon Tyson, senior pastor with Church of the City New York:
- Giving is central and not incidental to your spiritual foundation.
- You can’t be a mature Christian without a robust theology of money and a life of radical generosity.
You may need salvation – not just from your sin – but from your money.
If you are deceived, you are also defensive. Defensiveness around money reveals your idolatry of money.
When we believe the lie that my money is for me, we quickly spiral downward into a multitude of sins.
- We usurp God’s place and authority in our life. (Malachi 1:14)
Proverbs 30: 8-9 - We give God the leftovers.
Proverbs 3:9-10 - We neglect personal responsibility to share with those in need and deflect generosity to organizations and government.
Ephesians 4:28
2 Corinthians 8:1-9
2 Corinthians 8:11
Paul wants us to have a vision for being good at giving.
Paul provides a Kingdom view of giving.
3 primary ways people view economic systems in the world:
- Capitalism
- Communism
- Kingdom of God
Paul gives us a motive for giving modeled in Jesus.
- Giving unto guilt is sporadic and reactive.
- Giving unto grace is strategic and proactive.
Luke 8:1-3
How do we excel at giving?
- Start giving
- Strategic giving
- Secret giving
- Spontaneous giving
