One of the most basic and important commands for God’s people is to listen. We are to hear from God. This is our primary posture.
John 15:26-16:15
When the Holy Spirit testifies, our response is to testify.
When the Holy Spirit brings conviction, our response is to confess.
When the Holy Spirit guides, our response is to give in.
What the Holy Spirit does for His people:
- Regenerates (brings new birth) – John 3:5-6
- Indwells believers – 1 Corinthians 6:19
- Seals believers for redemption – Ephesians 1:13-14
- Empowers for holy living – Romans 8:13
- Produces spiritual fruit – Galatians 5:22-23
- Teaches and reminds of Christ’s words – John 14:26
- Intercedes in prayer – Romans 8:26-27
- Gives assurance of salvation (testifies with our spirit) – Romans 8:16
- Distributes spiritual gifts – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 11
- Empowers for witness and mission – Acts 1:8
- Transforms believers into Christ’s image – 2 Corinthians 3:18
- Brings freedom – 2 Corinthians 3:17
- Reveals and glorifies Christ – John 16:14
- Strengthens the inner person – Ephesians 3:16
- Unites believers into one body – 1 Corinthians 12:13
- Sanctifies believers – 2 Thessalonians 2:13
- Reveals God’s wisdom – 1 Corinthians 2:10-12
- Raises the dead / gives life – Romans 8:11
The most thrilling part about hearing from the Holy Spirit is knowing that we are moving in the same direction as God. We do this as we testify of what Jesus has done, confess our sins, and give into His guidance.
Helpful tips for hearing from the Holy Spirit:
- Create space.
- Filter out.
- Receive correction.
- Obey first.
